Can you imagine a world where you live a happy life, free from worry, war, or discrimination? A place of peace, where you are close to your family, live the way you wish, and you don’t have any enemies. Hobbits, these short, fictional, hairy creatures, who were created by J.R.R. Tolkien, live a life like this. They spend their time with their family and friends, doing things they enjoy, such as gardening, story telling and fishing. Hobbits don’t worry about things like how much they eat, their appearance, or the thoughts of others. They also live their lives one day at a time, unlike humans who run around all day. Overall, hobbits have nice lives.
People should be more like hobbits. No, we don’t need to become shorter, grow a lot of hair on our feet, or start living in holes. First, we need to become more peaceful. The definition of peace is a state of calm and quiet, and an absence of war and strife. The shire is a very calm place. Hobbits avoid war. They would never engage in war. If humans stopped waging war on each other, our world would be a better place. Conflicts do not need to be solved using guns, violence, or military action. When you try to solve conflicts with war, then you will cause more conflicts. SO, if we don’t wage war and strife, then there will be no war and strife.
Secondly, we need to be less busy. We need to slow our lives down and enjoy our time; instead of rushing around and letting our lives pass before our eyes. We should live our lives doing things we love, instead of working every day at a job that we hate. Hobbits enjoy their lives because they do things they enjoy. Yes, hobbits do have jobs. They like their jobs. They spend their time with their family and friends. Hobbits don’t work constantly, so that they are rich. They are usually content with what they have. They decide what they want to do with the time that is given to them. We could do the same, and live much more happy lives.
Lastly, we need to live off the land. Hobbits use the land, humans tend to demolish it. We destroy the land to build houses, buildings and roads. We rip down forests, marshes, and wetlands. People pollute with cars, mass amounts of garbage, and factories. I am not saying that we have to stop driving, throwing things away, or producing things in factory. We can lessen our pollution and help the land by living off the land and using fewer resources. Trees help us by turning carbon dioxide into oxygen, and we are cutting vast amounts of them down everyday. We destroy plants and animals without thinking. We need to grow the land, not destroy it.
Hobbits don’t live the perfect life, but they make the most of it. They are not fixated on every little thing. Their world is a bit isolated, but they don’t mind it. We need to live our lives a little more like these fictional creatures. Think about if your life is happy. Then think about what makes you happy? Does the love of your family and friends, the passion for your favorite hobby, or the zeal of your favorite game make you happy? These things make hobbits happy, and most likely you. Doing the things we like will make our lives just a little better.
